I’ve basically given up on parenting until the weather gets better, so the fact that I took ANY pictures this week that aren’t just of us staring at the television is impressive. We’re supposed to get more snow at the beginning of next week but it might be 50 on Friday, at which point I will start wearing shorts and flip flops.

This weekend starts a few really busy weeks in our future. It will be mid-April before any of us get a day to relax again, but it’s all FUN stuff so I’m looking forward to most of it. The highlights are a fancy brunch at a fancy restaurant for Easter, Evan’s birthday party and a fancy dress ball I’m being forced (FORCED I TELL YOU!) to attend with E.  I’m hoping to get back to regular family/life/everyday blogging too, but it’s hard when I’m trying to stay on top of  family life every day. It looks like we’re getting another winter storm this week which, COME ON MOTHER NATURE. Even if it’s 75% ice (ugh) and sleet (UGH) it’s going to mean another weekend of inside activity with 2 kids desperate for a day at the park. Where’s my early spring, Punxsutawny Phil? Imma about to take off my earrings and make myself a nice groundhog fur hat. I need it for the storm, obviously.

I have fond memories of spending my early-April birthday at the beach in South Carolina back in college. And not “at the beach” in the sense that we were on a beach in winter coats, but at the beach meaning bikinis and trashy magazines and trying to get a nice even tan long before Memorial Day. In New England you’re lucky if you’ve pulled out your capri pants before Memorial Day, never mind a bathing suit. It’s going to be cold here for a while, is what I’m saying.

Luckily I have two hardy Yankee children who are happy to put on 6 layers of clothing and stomp around in the snow and ice for as long as their wimpy mother will let them.

A few weeks ago the kind people from One Step Ahead asked if we’d be interested in some winter gear to help keep Caroline warm for these next few looooong months. She loves them both and I know they’re keeping her warm and cozy while she plays – especially since she asks for the hat and keeps it on her head.

My goal for the week (after I finish off this supply of clearance Valentine’s candy) is to get back on the exercise and healthy-eating train. I have NOT been doing well – especially with the snow days from preschool uggggggghhhh – but the eliptical is plugged in and the gym has my name on it. Today is my husband E’s 33rd birthday. To celebrate, he is going to work for 18 hours. Because of the storm I didn’t get to the grocery store for ingredients to make his favorite carrot cake. The kids and I didn’t get any We Love Daddy crafts done. Basically, he’s going to have the worst birthday ever (except for that one he spent in Boot Camp, I hear it was pretty lousy). I don’t think E is too upset with me though – he wasn’t very excited about turning 33. It’s sort of an in-between age – too young to buy a convertible and call it a mid-life crisis and too old to get good and drunk and whine about how old you are.

But it still sucks not to get to do something special on your birthday, so the kids and I are going to work on it. In the mean time, please enjoy photos of  the 6th worst storm in recorded New England history:

There’s still a travel ban on state roads and highways so we CAN’T go anywhere – not that we were the least bit tempted. We have electricity, Netflix streaming, lots of (boozy) hot cocoa and homemade pizza for dinner. E got home from work before the storm hit and gets to stay with us until Monday, so basically the storm is the best thing that’s happened in two weeks.
