Never Boring {$100 Giveaway!}

Thursday, March 20th, 2014
Before I had kids I was bored a lot. I don’t think I realized I was bored – I probably thought I enjoyed taking long naps and sleeping until noon and spending all my money on shoes. But it turns out I don’t actually enjoy any of those things all that much.

Well, I mean, obviously I still like naps. Everyone likes naps (except the children who actually should be taking them).

The first year after I got married we lived in Virginia Beach. Despite being young and thin (siiiiiigh) and living directly on the beach, I HATED it. It felt like there was nothing to do. All the guys E worked with either had kids or were trying to have kids (as a 23 year old with no children I was sort of an anomaly in the MilSpouse community). I remember going to a lot of street fairs or walking down to the cheesy beach shops or driving past the aquarium and thinking “If I had kids, this would be way more fun.”

Here in Connecticut I hear a lot of the younger, single guys complain about nothing to do. But since I have kids, I STRONGLY disagree. We have memberships to the aquarium, the seaport, the children’s museum and the science center. We walk to parades, or the library or the cheesy little carnivals downtown. My kids have favorite restaurants and favorite stores and favorite playgrounds. They go to school and take lessons and have a way more active social life than I’ve had since I was in high school.

I LOVE it.

I’m not someone who is ultra-motivated by nature. If I was still only responsible for myself (and my husband, I guess, although he’s not quite as helpless as children), I would spend a lot more time sleeping and feeling lonely. Kids don’t let you do that. They keep you up, they’re ALWAYS talking, they demand you go outside and see the world. You can’t avoid talking to anyone at the grocery store or wear ear buds all the time or even avoid smiling. I am nicer, friendlier and happier now that I have kids, and it has definitely made me a better person.

Last week after swim class, I took the kids to Panera for an early dinner and “special treat” for both being brave and learning new skills (Caroline can retrieve things from the bottom pool step, Evan learned how to do a sitting dive). I herded them into line where they both placed their orders with no help from me, then stormed the dessert counter to choose their cupcakes. The teenage girl behind the counter said “They’re so cute. I bet having kids is never boring.”

I smiled and said “No, I am never, ever bored.”

My Week(174) in iPhone Photos

Sunday, March 2nd, 2014

Right now I am sort of propped up sideways on the couch with an ice pack on my head and a hot pack under my left hip, because I am a) pregnant and b) a million years old. I had an amazing newborn session this morning but newborn sessions are basically like an extended workout – squat down, lean over, sit, stand up, reach out, lean the other way, etc etc etc – and most of my recent workouts have ended when I leaned over far enough to reach the remote. I have not been an active pregnant lady this time and I already regret it.

After mainlining the whole first season of The Americans, I’m pretty convinced that everyone I know is secretly a spy. But luckily my only secret is how many boxes of Girl Scout cookies I’ve eaten today. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll totally kill anyone who reveals that number, but I don’t think it’s going to undermine national security.

I can’t believe it’s March.

Cabin Fever Cure

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

The annual Cabin Fever Chowder Cook-Off happened down in Mystic this weekend. It was PACKED from the second they opened at noon until we left several hours later. A couple booths ran out of chowder. It wasn’t a surprise – Saturday was the first non-cold, non-snowing, non-raining day we’ve had since before Christmas. I saw a couple people in shorts, even though the temps barely broke 50 degrees. Both my children refused their coats and ran around acting like it was summer, even as they fell into giant snow drifts that will probably never melt.

(As I sit here typing this the forecast on my TV screen is predicting snow showers in 6 of the next 7 days, but I can also see the end of February on my calendar so I am pretty sure we’re going to survive.)

Normally my family wouldn’t be super excited over a chowder cook-off (those weirdos don’t really like chowder) but I had a couple things working in my favor. First, it was at Olde Mystickee Villageeeee, which means they could eat at our favorite grilled cheese place while I stuffed cream-based seafood in my mouth. Second, our Navy friends who just moved back from Virginia were there, which means we each had a counterpart to talk to. Other people’s kids who wear out your kids are the best kids.

Evan was OBSESSED with these juggler/comedians. Some of their jokes were a little PG-13 but they went right over the small people’s heads so I didn’t feel too guilty laughing. My kid makes the best faces when he’s happy.

After I was done with chowder and the kids had burned off a little of their cabin fever we drove over to Stonington to find a brewery our friends had heard about. Since I’m all pregnant and stuff I didn’t get to participate in the tasting part, but E assures me it’s delicious. He bought a growler (a big jug of beer) and can take it back to get it refilled. It’s called Beer’d Brewing Co, which is my favorite part. Their logo is a beard. Obviously.

While E was waiting for his jug’o’alcohol the kids ran around the GIANT indoor space. I think they use it for the farmer’s market in the mornings but as a place to run/take pictures it was equally awesome. We’re definitely going back to explore the shops and galleries in the mill again (and so E can get more beer).

Since the weather was FINALLY warm enough for something besides layers on top of layers on top of layers, I broke out the kids’ new play clothes. Boden was nice enough to send us a few things last month and I’ve been saving them for a fun outing so I could take pictures.

You have until midnight tonight to use the code 424F to get 20% off your Boden or Mini-Boden order. Tomorrow it will be 15% and Friday it will be 10%. You can also follow this link (not an affiliate link, just the discount). I ordered Evan adorable submarine swim trunks and Caroline a stripy, beachy dress. Clearly I’m ready for warmer days.

Disclaimer: Boden sent the kids the tops/bottoms in my photos but I wasn’t compensated for my post or opinions. I just can’t say no to adorable kid clothes.

E’s new favorite place

It was 50 degrees this weekend and I got an adequate amount of vitamin D for the first time in months. Unfortunately all the out-and-about on Saturday was a lot on my poor pregnant hips so Sunday I just lay on the couch. Well, after laundry and cleaning and a baby’s 6 months mini-session. But BESIDES that, I took a really nice nap.

My 20 week ultrasound is Monday afternoon. It will be a test of my willpower if I can still report on Tuesday morning that we don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl. Considering how my willpower fared against 20 different kinds of chowder on Saturday (very poorly) I’m not totally hopeful.

My Week(169) in iPhone Photos

Sunday, January 26th, 2014

I sort of can’t believe that a week ago we were in Ohio. It’s amazing how easy it is to forget the change in our routine after a few days of normalcy. I think that’s why coming home from vacations are so rough – once you’re in your own house a couple nights the time away doesn’t feel real anymore. One of these days I’ll go on a real vacation and then tell you if that theory holds up.

Saturday:

saturday1

Oh well that’s not going to give me nightmares.

saturday2

First day of ballet class

saturday3

Buying essentials.

Today we are introducing Evan to the Star Wars movies. It’s basically the best plan ever, since we’ve bought ourselves an entire day of sitting on the couch with only occasional interruptions to explain that Han is definitely going to be OK even though he’s frozen or that they’re called “light sabers” not “life savers”. The day would be almost perfect if we weren’t out of jelly beans.

Caroline finally has her 3 year checkup tomorrow so I can see if she’s grown as much as I think she has. I’m not looking forward to the screaming while she has her shots part but afterwards we can get milkshakes so we’ll both feel better. Plus the baby loves milkshakes. Smart baby.
