A Family Together, Adventure Awaits {Sponsored by #ChevySalutes}

It’s summer!

Technically it’s not yet. Most of the beaches aren’t open. A lot of the waterfront restaurants are still boarded up. The marinas don’t have the boats in the water yet. But it sure feels like summer, and that’s enough for me.

This summer is our ninth here in Connecticut, which a crazy long time to be stationed somewhere. We’ve lived in this house for EIGHT YEARS already. I still remember the panic I felt when I closed on it – alone, because the Navy doesn’t really care about your house closing deadline when there are submarines to power – thinking we would probably have to sell it in two years when we got transferred. And here we are, three kids later, still living in the green house.

This summer is also a big one for us as a family. E switched jobs in January, to a shore duty position (sort of like a desk job, except sometimes your desk is at sea), The idea is after a strenuous (UNDERSTATEMENT) sea tour, a sailor gets to do a shore duty assignment so they can get to know their family again. A shore duty job means I can make dentist appointments again. E can split soccer practice carpool with me. He might get to attend kindergarten orientation and the spring concert and take the kids for ice cream when they move up a level in swim class. Basically, he gets to be a dad again.

We plan to take full advantage of that change of pace. It’s been years since E got to come on our “family” summer vacation and he’s never even seen my parent’s lake house. I can’t really complain about my lack of vacation – part of being a military spouse is realizing you can’t spend your life waiting for your partner to be able to come along on adventures, so you do them yourself. Two days in the car with a 5 year old, 3 year old, and a 2 month old? No problem! I’ve got that covered. It might be craziness or sheer force of will that kept me going but for the past 3 years I’ve spent the summer making sure the kids have Fun with a capital F, even if it almost kills me.

But now! Now we can make some plans. Now we can find new roads, travel new paths, have new adventures as a family. The kids will have super fun memories that include their dad. I mean, it’s not blue skies and sunshine as far as the eye can see – there are still submarines to be powered and jobs to be done and emergencies to handle and fires to put out. I am one thousand percent certain one of these weekends will find me in the car with three kids headed off on a “family” adventure as a solo-parent.  But for the most part we are good to go and so, so ready for it.

Of course, every bit of that could change with one piece of paper. E is up for a promotion and the results come out in June. With every promotion there’s new orders and every time there are new orders it gets more and more likely we might move. Right now I have no desire to move, but that’s because it’s 80 degrees with a beautiful breeze blowing in from my perfect front porch. In February I would have taken orders to the moon if someone had promised they don’t have snow there. I have to admit It would be a little bit exciting to pack up and start someplace new, even if it did turn all our plans inside out. We would just find a new road to our future.
