Old Sturbridge Village

Sunday, January 20th, 2013

I really like taking the kids to do Fun But Educational Things, which is why we spend most of our extra time and money on memberships to places like the aquarium and Mystic Seaport. Up until recently it’s usually been much more about me than about them, since they couldn’t care less where we go as long as they can run around in circles while I say “Look! Nature! Science! Historic Crap!” All they’re really interested in is pushing buttons.

Unfortunately, I put a lot of pressure on myself to make all of our visits the kind of amazing memories I have from my own childhood. Nevermind the fact that I’m sure for every beautiful spring day at Old Sturbridge Village churning butter in a bonnet there were probably 14 visits to some dumb museum where I whined the whole time about how booooooring it was can we go hooooome now? I need to pin a note to the inside of my purse that says “They are TWO and THREE, don’t WORRY” so when I’m digging for some granola bars to stop the ear-splitting whining from the double stroller I remember, oh yes, they are TWO and THREE I don’t really need to WORRY if they aren’t interested in the finer points of blacksmith…ery.

All in all, it wasn’t too bad for an outside adventure in January. We’ll definitely be back in the spring to see the sawmill in action and in the summer for the gardens (There’s an antique carriage rally in June! That is EXACTLY the sort of event I will greatly enjoy forcing my family to attend!) I’m tempted to buy a membership but SIX memberships (well, five memberships and a season pass to Sesame Place) seems a little…excessive. Maybe I’ll hold off until the kids are old enough to appreciate all the history a little more.

Home again, home again jiggity jig – although life isn’t going to REALLY settle down until I get back from BlogHer in August.

Why do I look so happy to be awake at 5 am?

So happy to be home he fell asleep

Making up for vacation with C25K at the track

She missed the pool so I let her play in the sink

Squishing Caroline. At least it was GENTLE squishing.

I don’t need no stinkin’ clothes

Checking out North Lake

Have you heard of these things Mom? They’re called cucumbers. I need more, immediately.

Cousins rented a water slide. Evan was on it for LITERALLY 8 hours. At least.

Happy Birthday ‘Merika!

Still exhausted from the waterslide

C25K again – This is the local high school

Stroller Strides. HOT AS BALLS.

Ginger boy makes friends with stray ginger kitty – head explodes with gingery awesomeness.

Graham cracker thief looks guilty

The garden store is my happy place

Target is my even happier place

It’s amazing how fast the summer days go even when all we’re really doing is hanging out trying to stay cool. I think we’ll spend the rest of the weekend THINKING of things to go do and then doing none of them.

My Week(36) in iPhone Photos

We went up to Plymouth, Mass to see E's family. Helloooooo lunch.

The Massachusetts relatives live in an old Cape a block from the beach that's FULL of fantastic antiques like this stuff, but still super casual and beachy. I have house envy.

TOTAL MELTDOWN on the way home was temporarily calmed with Mama's iPad.

Delicious, healthy, Weight Watchers approved breakfast to start our Super! Fun! Day! at the Seaport!

And then this happened.

Hanging out in bed at 7 pm. Because I am lame. Literally.

I put the toddler to work cleaning the house while I lay on the couch.

Nursing bebeh, sexy hospital sock

That, my friends, is an empty laundry basket because my husband did all the laundry while I was injured.

Our nephew came to visit & entertain the baby

Then we entertained him with the Kinect (while wearing Evan's baby sunglasses of course)

Caroline watching The Colbert Report.

Maybe if I hide my new shoes behind E's stuff he won't notice!

I bought this dress at Target. It is very very comfortable and possibly makes me look pregnant.

Are we ever going to leave this DAMN HOUSE?

Roasted sweet potatos for the baby. Note: 22 minutes is too long - they turn into mush and she can't grab them.

Bebeh toooooooes

Now I have TWO kids who keep trying to take my iPhone

Finally made it to the Seaport & Little Evan got to ride on a boat

Look what I got it in mail! More Uff Da goodness to add to my collection. I mean CAROLINE'S collection.

I found a local consignment shop. I am in love. These were SIX DOLLARS.

My ankle/foot/leg is feeling much better, thanks for all your well wishes and questions – and a HUGE thanks to my husband for letting me sit on the couch for 2 full days so I could let it heal. I’m still not going to be running for a while (or even walking very fast) but I think I can get back to my normal life on Monday.  I’m also going to have to get back to Pennywise in Mystic, the FABULOUS consignment store I finally visited today while I sent the rest of the family down to the Seaport. It’s a small shop but totally packed with awesome finds – besides the polka-dot Steve Madden wedges, I got a pair of super comfy black heels (also $6), a cool swingy tunic top ($9) and another bright colored maxi dress with pockets ($18). I was really excited Pennywise had lots of stuff in my (spoken: large-ish) size – normally there’s an abundance of tiny clothes but nothing to fit over my boobs. Now we’re all taking a little siesta before hitting the river for a little afternoon boating. I hope your weekend is going as well as mine!
