A Moroccan Infusion in a Connecticut Winter {Giveaway!}

Tuesday, February 11th, 2014

I know it’s not actually that stupid groundhog’s fault – an overgrown hamster can’t actually change weather patterns – but right now I’m dreaming of a groundhog skin hat to keep my head warm. I don’t actually HATE snow days. Staying home and building snowmen and watching movies isn’t the worst. My kids LIKE the snow and never seem to get cold and sending them out back to throw snow on each other always means we get an early and easy bedtime. But I am a wimp and have a strong dislike of being cold so I like the coming back inside part the best. It’s marginally warmer inside, most of the time. Unfortunately my house is ancient and has steam radiators, so running them full blast also means sapping every ounce of moisture out of the air. When we had the carpet down I couldn’t walk across a room without flinching any time I touched something. I’ve shocked myself with my iPod headphones a dozen times in the last couple weeks (I’m not even sure how that happens). And the poor ginger’s hair stands on end all day. It’s adorable, but they keep shouting “Mommy, you zapped me!”

The dry winter air is especially rough on my poor expanding baby belly. I’ve just reached the point where “popped” is the appropriate word to describe my stomach, rather than “Man, she really needs to lay off the burritos and do a few sit ups” (although those are also good ideas, considering how weak my stomach muscles are). Pregnancy always makes my skin super dry and I scramble to find something that helps. So when BlogHer offered to send me the new Suave Professionals® Moroccan Infusion skin care products I said “OMG SO ITCHY!” And then I said “Uh, I mean yes” because telling the people you work for about your dry, itchy skin is kind of gross.

Moroccan argan oil is one of those ingredients popping up all over beauty blogs and commercials and known to be rich in nutrients and antioxidants. Suave took the same ingredients from more expensive brands and put them in their Professionals® line so women everywhere have access to premium products infused with authentic Moroccan argan oil. They sent me both the Body Lotion and the Dry Body Oil Spray and while I like them both the spray is my absolute new favorite product. It’s hard to dump oil out of a non-spray container onto your skin without making a huge mess and getting way too much, so the spray bottle is genius. It only takes a couple of squirts and the oil absorbs really quickly (I wouldn’t say INSTANTLY, but by the time I grab my clothes I can put them on without any stickiness). Once you rub it in it’s isn’t oily at all, just soft and moisturized (and not itchy!). My skin feels amazing all day and I smell like a million bucks.

MY Hair Smells Like Apples But YOU Can Win A $50 Gift Card!

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Despite my hair not being cut or colored professionally in the last zillion years, I have been enjoying my calm, flake-free scalp thanks to the shampoo and conditioner Head and Shoulders sent me to review back in the fall.

I’m really enjoying it, especially now, in this terrible below-freezing weather. It’s easy to resist the urge to scratch my head like a monkey in public when it doesn’t itch in the first place. And not worrying about flakes on my extremely glamorous winter uniform of black cardigan over nursing tank is a definitely plus.

Sadly my bottles were getting mighty empty (I suspect my husband has been enjoying a healthy, flake-free scalp from their HydraZinc formula as well,) so when BlogHer asked if I wanted to try a NEW Head & Shoulders shampoo and conditioner combo I jumped at the chance. Especially when I heard it was shampoo and conditioner with a fresh, naturally inspired green apple fragrance.

Personally, I would like if EVERYTHING in life came in a fresh, naturally inspired green apple fragrance. It’s clean and tangy and comforting, and just knowing my hair smells like apples makes me want to toss my hair around like a model.

Toss sniff toss sniff sniff toss.

I’ve been wearing it down more often just so I can smell it. The shampoo’s scent is definitely stronger than the conditioner’s-strong enough to have me taking hits straight from the bottle as a morning wake-up call – but they both smell delicious.

My husband accused me of wearing some sort of man-attracting perfume, even though I was wearing sweat pants and no makeup, so I would say it’s definitely not too floral or feminine to share with a dude.

Just like all the Head & Shoulders Scalp Care products I’ve tried it leaves my hair healthy and shiny. It’s even pH balanced and gentle enough for everyday use on color treated or permed hair, so even if I do get to the salon for that color I’ve had my eye on, I can keep using it.

I also love that the conditioner doesn’t weigh my hair down even when I use it all the way to my roots, so I can skip a day (or two) of hair washing and still look great.

And once again, BlogHer and Head & Shoulders want to give YOU a chance to win a $50 Visa Gift Card!

Just answer the following question in the comments to be entered for a chance to win:

What beauty routine do use when you get ready for a date night (and don’t tell me you never get to go on date nights anymore-let’s make 2012 the year we all eat at high-chair free restaurants and see R-rated movies in the theater)?

Olay Smooth Finish Saves Me From A Life Of Shame (And A Giveaway!)

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

I share a lot of personal stuff online. My kidney stones. The state of my uterus. Birth stories. One time, I wrote a post here on my blog about how I am really sweaty. That was pretty embarrassing. I thought at the time it was probably the most embarrassing thing I was ever going to write about online.

I was wrong.

Today, I am going to tell you my deepest, darkest, personal secret, one I don’t even think my husband knows because I am so ashamed.

I shave my moustache. Yep. Shave. With a razor. I could have participated in Movember and probably done better than a good percentage of dudes.

I started shaving it in college after I went to the salon for an eyebrow wax. The waxer said, “Obviously you’ll want your lip done too.”

I was like, “Um, NO, that WASN’T obvious to me until just now, so thanks for that. I’ll be over here in the corner weeping and wondering how many of my friends are silently hoping I’m going to do something about my HORRIBLE LIP HAIR.”

I let her wax it, a mistake I never made again because my pain tolerance is not that high. I tried a hair removal cream, but it burned and smelled terrible, and I was too poor to afford it regularly. So in desperation, I used my cheap disposable razor. POOR CHOICE. The hair is blond, but it grows fast and thick so now I have to do it every couple of days or I get stubble. STUBBLE. On my face.

So when BlogHer asked if I would review New Olay Smooth Finish Facial Hair Removal Duo, I couldn’t say yes fast enough, even though I knew it meant writing about my moustache on the internet. I was that desperate to find a better solution.

The New Olay Smooth Finish Facial Hair Removal Duo box comes with two things: a Skin Guarding Balm to protect your skin before you remove the hair and the Hair Removal Cream, which does the actual work.

The balm goes on like a lip gloss, complete with a lip-gloss-like applicator. It didn’t have any smell and was slightly waxy but not at all unpleasant. I was a little worried it might make my skin break out, but I haven’t had any problems in the days since I’ve used it.

When I smoothed the hair removal cream over the balm I didn’t feel a tingle or burn. I didn’t even notice a smell until the 8 minutes were up, and I wiped it off right under my nose. Then it smelled like typical hair removal cream. The hair was definitely gone, and I didn’t have any redness or soreness or lingering effects, unless you count feeling prettier and less self-conscious as a lingering effect.

Overall, it only took a few minutes longer than my old method, and the results have lasted much longer. I like that I can do it in the morning and not worry about redness even if I have somewhere to be or errands to run. And I REALLY like that I don’t feel like some kind of crazy weirdo who’s going to end up on a talk show called “My Shameful Secret Habit” with the lady who eats table sugar with a spoon and the guy who bites his toenails.
