Vote for the Worst Kids Show On Television! Round 1: PBS/Sprout
Today is the second half of round one, where very nice shows like Daniel Tiger are put up against Caillou aka “the worst of the worst” and suffer obvious crushing defeat. In an effort to keep this down to a reasonable number of posts we started with lists of shows we knew off the top of our heads and then filled each other in on channels we were less familiar with (plus a little Googling) so this isn’t EVERY SHOW EVER. We never even touch on the eye-violating graphic nightmare that is Dirt Girl World (probably for the best, save your eyes and DON’T go looking for it). So although this is a very thorough rundown of the worst kids shows on television it is not exhaustively all-inclusive.
The game: we made “divisions” based on four channels (Nick Jr, Disney Jr, Hub and Sprout/PBS) and tried to keep it sort of limited to shows aimed at preschoolers, just to narrow it down. We will each host two channels and voting will narrow things down to a final four, one from each channel, which will narrow down to an ultimate showdown deciding the worst preschool show on television. I was pretty torn on Sid the Science Kid vs Thomas because introducing kids to science is wonderful and all that but goddamn, Gerald, sit down and shut it! It’s not always about you.

The SOUND of Cat in the Hat–the voices and songs and sound effects–makes my ears bleed. I HATE that show for that particular reason.

Today I was actually able to vote! Yesterday I hadn’t heard of any of the shows, and my kid hadn’t watched them that I know of. Right now we are in the middle of a pretty serious Elmo obsession. There are worse things to be addicted to I guess. I voted for curious george even though I haven’t actually seen the show just because I recently read the original book to my son and was so disappointed to learn that George was kidnapped and learned to smoke. I didn’t remember that from my childhood.

Oh, man! One of my favorites (Sid the Science Kid) was pitted against Kai’s favorite show (Thomas)! BUT… I had to vote Sid down, as I think it’s definitely more appropriate for the K-2 audience. Thomas is the only reason I can ever get anything done. It has to be the preschool equivalent of crack.

I ranked Sid higher than Thomas but only bc you use a graphic of current Thomas with its creepy CGI faces & overly moral ham handed lessons.

I hate current Thomas. I LOVE old Shining Time Station. George MF-ing Carlin as Mr. Conductor was brilliant.
A lot of shining time station creeped me out. The nickelodeon, frinstance. I like older Thomas with the stop motion and the pissy behavior and casual insults, although it’s also modelling bad behavior.

Why do people hate cailou so much? My oldest is obsessed and while he can be annoying he often acts like her and she gets to see the situation modeled for her, but man people hate him with a vengeance haha
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is certifiably the worst, but I had to vote caillou. Also certifiable- The Cat in the Hat, I never thought I would hate Martin Short, but boy, do I.
Words do not express how much I HATE, LOATH, and DESPISE Calliou!!! Seriously, I find him the most annoying, needy four year old ever! If my own four year old was that whiny we would have serious problems.

I sang the songs for each show in my head while I voted and now I hate myself. And I agree Amy, Word World is the business. And we love Sid, but Gerald is going to end up in some kind of institution.
