Puppy Love
Baby Evan really really really really loves our dog Brutus. Really. He likes dogs in general – “dog” was the second sign he ever learned (after “milk”) and “dohg!” is one of the only things he says clearly and consistently – but I suspect he loves HIS dog best. Actually, I don’t suspect. I know. I know he likes the dog more than he likes pretty much anything. Including me.
Does he say or sign “mama”? No. Never. But every morning when I get him out of the crib he says “dohg! dohg!” until we come downstairs and say good morning to Brutus.
Clearly the dog wins.
Sadly, I don’t think the dog feels the same way.
I mean, obviously Brutus tolerates Baby Evan. He’s never snapped or barked or intentionally knocked him over. Letting someone use your tail as a rope so they can climb up onto YOUR chair and then jump up and down on your face is definitely a sign of like. But I’m pretty sure Brutus wishes we had never brought this creature home in the first place. I can’t bring myself to tell him about the second baby.
I like to think if Baby Evan ever fell down a well, Brutus would come and tell us. Or that he would bravely defend us from burglars. Or come wake everyone up if there was a fire. Unfortunately, I doubt he could be bothered to get out of his chair. Because that is His Chair, just in case you were wondering.
Not that you’d want to sit in it anymore, what with the smell. And the hair. And the smell.
But Baby Evan doesn’t seem to mind.
I’m just kidding about the not-saving-us-from-disaster thing. Of course he would save the day. Otherwise there wouldn’t be anyone to feed him.

OMG. My heart is all melty now. I’ve been working on a similar post about O and Lucy because they are teh best buds too. Baby Evan is a very lucky boy to have such a loving dog. :-)
Ohh emm gee! That second picture is THE BEST EVER!
You need to submit that second picture to one of those greeting card contests where they print actual photos submitted by normal folks. I’m not sure what occasion that could be. Wait, I’ve got it: “Say what? It’s your birthday?” Because it looks like he’s leaning in to hear a secret from Brutus. Adorable.
The picture of Brutus looking at you saying, “What about a second baby?” made me laugh out loud. It really looks like that’s what he’s thinking!
What a GOOD DOGGIE!!! to be so tolerant of Baby E.
these pictures are SO cute! Solo-boy loves our doggie too, although she is not quite so tolerant (8 month old pup). Brutus is such a trooper!
hahaha – those pleading “what is this small loud thing doing to me” eyes are hilaaarious. My old dog Ditto had the same face whenever I cuddled her past the point of reason…and I was 15 when we got her.
This is too funny. I love the second picture. Rylie loves our dogs too. Luckily one of them loves her back, but the other not so much. Like you said they tolerate her, but the love is not reciprocated hehe
That’s adorable! I love the pics! I wish Reid cared as much for our dogs (although his first word WAS dog, so he must care some) (ok, it was “OG” but he MEANS dog). They love him though. He drops food. He’s their hero!
That is so adorable!!! We have 2 cats and Mia LOVES them. One loves her too but the other constantly runs away from her. Luckily the one that likes her is 14 lbs, so wouldn’t be hurt if Mia was too rough with her. The other is 7 lbs and 16 years old, so we have to be more careful with her. The have never swatted at her or bit her, but have hissed.
We have 2 cats too (although they’ve been banished to the basement for the summer so I’ve practically forgotten about them) and one is very very very tolerant. The baby has been lying ON her since he could crawl and now his favorite game is playing crack the whip with her tail.
The other cat hates everyone and would take out an eye if ANY of us tried to get too close.
Doggie and babies! my favorite!
Evan looks very handsome! He’s gotten some extra hair in the front since the last time I saw him. He is gonna be such a charmer :)
Alright. I just found your blog on Top Baby Blogs. Your handsome son and dog have won me over. Sooo… I’m now your newest follower! :)
You’re due with #2 just a few days before I am (with #1).
Hi Jess! Thanks for stopping by! I’ll come over and catch up on your pregnancy adventures tonight, when the little terror stops running in circles shoving granola bar into his face :)
This just confirms what I have been saying–my son needs a dog!
OH MY GOODNESS! That 2nd picture is seriously one of the cutest pictures I’ve ever seen! You need to frame it!
Love this! Max also adores our dog, and shows his extreme excitement by squealing every time he sees him. Max also adores (his top favorite toys, I think) the dog bed, the dog crate, the dog water bowl and grossest of all, the dog’s favorite squeeze baby toy, which stinks to high heaven and is always wet with dog drool. Max also likes to put it in his mouth. Lovely. So far, our dog, who is six times the size of Max, has pretty tolerant of the little dude, and will gamely try and swipe his dog baby out of Max’s hands while Max swings it around in the air. We’ll see what happens when Max really starts to become active… Fun times at home with a baby and dog :-).
E has DOHG and Niko has BAAAAAAAAL! He has lately taken to sleeping (in our bed) with a basket ball. Because BAAAAAAL!
Brutus is a champion. Blue & Coco growl & snap at Hudson constantly- unless he has food or sweaty feet. Then they love him. I need a brutus. Wanna trade?
