Caroline: 10 Months
I accidentally ruined Caroline’s 10 month photoshoot today. Instead of taking pictures during the middle of the afternoon when the light in the family room is best, I let her fall asleep in my lap while she was nursing and spent two hours petting her hair, sniffing the top of her head, listening to her tiny baby noises and watching her twitch as she dreamed.
So maybe “ruined” is the wrong word. Maybe “soaked up two magical hours worth of baby moments that hardly ever seem to happen anymore because she is growing up so fast” is more accurate. I love her bunches and bunches. It’s sort of disgusting.
I had to look back at the 9 month update to see if I was remembering things wrong or if she really has changed SO MUCH in just four weeks. In those pictures, you can just barely see one top tooth peeking through. Now she’s got two great big giant chompers on top plus two on the bottom and a handful more threatening to pop through any minute. Isn’t it crazy how much older babies look with teeth? SO MUCH OLDER!
She’s also walking, without encouragement, on almost any surface. She ran away from me during Stroller Strides this week and I had a “oh no, I lost the baby” moment. She was only 5 feet away behind a mom doing sit ups, but she’s so little she’s easy to lose. I’m going to have to work on the constant vigilance.
I’ve given up on super cute outfits, because between the crawling/walking, the drooling/teething and the constant shoving of food into her mouth she’s a mess. I change her shirt at least 3 times a day. And before you call me an idiot and suggest I use one of the five bazillion bibs I keep in the kitchen drawer I’ll tell you she feels about bibs the way Dora feels about using her inside voice. NOT GONNA HAPPEN. It’s easier to just buy stain remover in bulk.
There is not one thing about her I would change. I TOLD you it was disgusting.
Likes include her blankies (any of them), iPhones, popcorn, apples, boobs, her brother’s sippy cup, dancing, walking, smiling, blowing raspberries, peek-a-boo, books, baths, her mama and putting gross things in her mouth.
Dislikes include teething, hoods, falling on her face, being cold, missing naps, strange dogs and having her nails trimmed.
Milestones plus video proof of the walking/weird crawling below the epic number of underexposed pictures.
P.S. Yes I am wearing leggings as pants in the video. In my defense…ah screw it. I have no defense. They’re SO COMFORTABLE.
10 Month Milestones (from BabyCenter, as usual)
Mastered Skills (most kids can do)
Waves goodbye – Yes. And hello. And loves to clap. And plays peek-a-boo and “how big is the baby?” and understands what I think is a surprising number of words. But I’m her mom so I have to think she’s a genius.
Picks things up with pincer grasp – As long as it’s food. Or trash.
Crawls well, with belly off the ground – She’s actually terrible at that. She crawls sideways on one leg. But since she’s, you know, WALKING I don’t think she’s actually missing this milestone.
Emerging Skills (half of kids can do)
Says “mama” or “dada” to the correct parent – She has said “mama” to me exactly twice, but not regularly, and I’ve never heard her say “dada”.
Indicates wants with gestures – Gestures, screeching, grabbing things. She has a lot of wants.
Advanced Skills (a few kids can do)
Stands alone for a couple of seconds – For a couple minutes.
Puts objects into a container – Does “food into her mouth” count? Because she’s good at that. Mostly she’s good at taking objects OUT of containers to make the biggest mess possible.

Elena is just starting to sit by herself with me arranging her in that position. Watching Caroline walking, crawling, and you holding her amazes me that Elena will get there in the next short 4 months or so. Belated comment (reminded by Caroline in orange pic): I love the idea of Caroline as sunshine for Halloween.
There is too much cute here for me to handle. The pumpkin pics? TOO MUCH. And the walking blows my mind. (And why didn’t I think to keep the bibs in the KITCHEN? duh)
Aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I can’t believe she is walking around on her feet. She was born FIVE MINUTES AGO and I remember you twittering about it and now here she is all human with big grown up person eyes in her little baby face and what the hell I mean really, people.
WALKING?! Please tell me that’s super advanced, freak of nature (in a good way!) stuff..i’m not ready for that in only 5 months!!
Of course she is a genius, an adorable little too cute for words genius.
She’s such a little cutie. And you look lovely in the video, leggings and all!
Never too much orange! She is a DOLL!
What is up with your kids walking so early???? you or E must have some super walking genes. and seriously, why is Dora ALWAYS yelling? i complain about that at least once an episode. And don’t even get me started on how her belly is always hanging out under her shirt.
I was going to say the same thing!! They are like, walking geniuses-it’s incredible! We haven’t watched Dora but since we have enough yelling and screaming here on a daily basis I will now avoid it like the plague.
I LOVE the pictures! Would you send me the one of Crap load of orange and the one of her with the pumpkin in front of her? Those are just TOO cute!
That is the best crawling action I’ve ever seen!!! She’s beyond adorable and I LOVED the orange outfit! So cute!
She is so stinkin’ cute! I love her crawl! And she’s such a good walker, esp. for 10 months. Noah (6 months) is trying to crawl, and the rocking back and forth on the hands and knees action is killing me (in a good way).
First time commenter!
Love your sense of humor, always have a good laugh reading your blog.
Had to suppress a laugh here at work over dora and her inside voice.
Caroline is adorable and love the pics.
My daughter is two and a half and has the same orange skirt!!
I noticed you mentioned Caroline loves popcorn.
My daughter’s pediatrician told us no popcorn, no hard candy, no lollipops until she’s 4, per the AAP.
So I’ve never given her popcorn or hard candy. She is obsessed with lollipops though and I watch her like a hawk when she gets one.
Someone we indirectly know lost their 18 month old, she choked on popcorn. I’m sorry this sounds scary but, I had to mention this.
Thanks for the comment. Our ped had never mentioned popcorn before, so I looked up the guidelines. It looks like they also recommend not giving grapes or raw vegetables to children under 4 but I’m pretty sure my 2.5 year old would murder me in my sleep if I stopped letting him eat carrot sticks. We practice baby lead weaning, which means both kids have been feeding themselves finger food without a single choking incident since they were old enough to sit up. It also means I keep a VERY close watch on them when they eat, because their food IS table food instead of purees. I listed popcorn because she was sitting in my lap as I was writing the update, trying to grab my popcorn out of my hand and snack on the crumbs. But I really do appreciate your concern, it must be scary to know someone who experienced such a tragic loss.
Aah..the AAP..gotta love them! My kiddo LOVES raw carrots too..won’t touch cooked ones. I get the feeling our ped is a big spokesperson for the AAP or something..she also told us to cut her grapes in half!
I guess I’m just nervous about popcorn because of the incident.
She definitely looks too little to be walking! So adorable in all her outfits and all the pics are great! This is SUCH a wonderful age.
And I TOTALLY wore leggings as pants the other day. And didn’t even change before we went to soccer practice. Sorry other parents…. ;-P
Wow, she is just beautilful! I love all of her expressions. And the walking is just amazing. Knox was born 11/4 and is cruising furniture, standing independently and has taken one step twice. He’s on the sensitive, cautious side so I think it will be a while before he takes off running. However, he crawls EXACTLY like Caroline! Using that leg out front makes him extremely fast and efficient, even if others think it’s different. We call it the half-gorilla walk.
Frankly, I’m glad he’s not quite walking yet – I’m not ready for the BIG ONE coming up in just TWO WEEKS. I’m both excited and a little sad. I just can’t believe how fast time goes.
OH EM GEE I JUST WANT TO SMUSH HER CHEEKS!
Aah! Carson crawled the same way! Never changed it and it was adorable! Why did I not get a video of it? I suck. Oh, and I didn’t have my iPhone yet!
Awww, so adorable!!!! She looks so cute in her little tutus!!! I can’t believe she is walking. Not that I’m surprised, because Evan walked so early too (your kids are very advanced walkers :) But because I can’t believe that TEN MONTHS has gone by already!!!! That’s just nuts. Feels like 5 seconds to me. …..Oh and by the way, you my friend, are looking fabulous!! You are really giving that weight watchers thing a good name! :)
She is a genius! Brains and beauty, what a little rockstar! Your leggings look great FYI, I’m embarrassed to admit how often i wear pjs :D.
Holy speedy baby! She is adorable!
It’s not disgusting. It’s motherhood :)
The orange. Oh my God. The orange. She is so cute in it though!
She looks so cute. What a cute girl you have. God bless you and your baby.
She is beyond cute. Love the raspberries picture. Her eyes are magical.
Seriously, she is one of those babies I look at and think, “I gotta get me one of those.” So sweet!
THE WONKY CRAWL!!!!! EZRA DOES THE SAME THING! I call it wonky with deeply felt affection, because I think I’d be seriously bummed if he suddenly started crawling normally. We practice BLW, too, and both my kids eat me out of house and home. Ezra was ten months on the 20th, and I swear, it’s like all of a sudden dude wants to throw any and every morsel of food he sees down his gullet. I love seeing Caroline walk! Ezra isn’t there yet, but I don’t mind; I can pretend he’s not speeding through infancy so fast ;)
OMG with the cuteness, Suzanne. i cannot handle it. ;)
LOVE the Halloween outfit and tutu! I feel like I may need to get K some tutus because they are so damn cute!
