Sponsored Post: Baby Feeding Magic & Plum Organics

Thanks to Plum Organics for sponsoring my post about tips for baby feeding magic. What if you let baby choose what’s for dinner? Check out their cute “Quest for Yum!” video and see what happens!

The first time around I made all of my kid’s baby food. Well, technically. I took a class on how to steam and puree veggies (here’s a tip: you steam them, then you puree them. It doesn’t matter how. That’ll be $50) and I bought my weight in sweet potatoes and avocados.  I spent a whole weekend making, portioning and freezing a dozen different kinds and flavors. I was Supermom, provider of healthy organic meals!

He hated it. All of it. And not just the purees – he pretty much refused to eat any real food until after his first birthday. Despite all my plans to let nothing but the most nutritious and chemical-free foods pass my baby’s lips I ended up banging my head against the counter, begging him to eat anything. ANYTHING. Here, have a piece of candy! Here, eat these Fritos! Please, try some of this bright yellow processed cheese product on white bread. It’s NOT EVEN THE ENRICHED KIND!

All that hard work sat in my freezer for almost a year before I threw it out to make room for waffles (turns out even REALLY PICKY KIDS eat waffles).

With baby number two, I skipped homemade purees and went straight to the store bought stuff (love the little pouches!), baby puffs and table food. Can she hold it? Then she can eat it. Although “eat” might not be exactly the right term:

Mac and cheese for dinner?

Challenge accepted!

I try to keep things easy. Cut up peppers. Puffs. SO MANY PUFFS. Pouches of applesauce to share with the toddler (and me, if I forgot my snack). Cheese sticks. It’s a combination of baby-led weaning, laziness and practicality. I can’t worry too much about every bite of every food. If the toddler is going to throw his snack on the floor, she’s probably going to get it. Wait, that’s also laziness. But if you saw just how fast she can crawl towards a wayward pretzel you wouldn’t take it away from her either. It works for us.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to spot beige food on my flowered carpet so the floors are a MESS. I don’t know how people without dogs even do it.

Brutus sez: Can you give her some more chicken?

I suspect the differences in the two baby feeding experiences is due more to the babies themselves (especially Evan’s problems with weird textures) than my approach, but it did help me learn to chill out a little. Some kids are just picky.

The baby in this video would fit right in at my house. Chase that food! Chase it!

  1. I sort of think the entire BLW movement was born out of laziness and practicality in the first place.

  2. That series of photos is priceless!

Haha I love this :) my post today was mostly about how uptight I was about feeding my little one…..it didn’t take me long to chill out and realize that she’s going to eat what she wants to eat, when she’s hungry. I’ll be much more relaxed with our next kiddo, for sure!

She looks like such a little peanut in that highchair!

Right on sister! I was uptight for about a week, then around 7 months Cora grabbed some lamb stew with beans and ate it (sans teeth) right off my spoon. She never touched all those delicious purees I made either-so annoying! I could have spent all that money on new shoes instead of supporting local agriculture. Of course, now that she’s two and a half she LOVES those pouches-I can’t get out of Target without her downing 3 or 4 of them.

The dogs really help us out, too, because the baby is all the time throwing his food on the floor. I love those pouches of food, and my baby just recently started enjoying the squeezable fruit pouches that he can just suck on. Very cute pictures!
