Home For The Holidays {Wayfair Giveaway!}

If I posted a picture of my house right now, I’m pretty sure Wayfair would throw me out of their Homemakers program. But since they totally understand my aspirations to one day have a catalog perfect home, they’ve kindly sponsored a post so I can at least DREAM about getting organized.

We’re hosting a bunch of people this year, not for Christmas exactly but for Caroline’s birthday party the weekend before. Don’t ask how party planning is going, the answer is AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. But even if I’m running around like a crazy person writing a menu 12 hours before the guests show up we’ll have a house full with more company staying at hotels. No matter how behind I get, I am committed to the house being MAGICAL and FESTIVE and WELCOMING, so here’s a look at how I’m getting my home ready for the holidays.

Linc is totally ready for the holidays with those jammies

Christmas Decorating Challenge #1: My house is ALREADY full of stuff.

Solution: When we took the Christmas decorations OUT of the tubs in the basement, we put a lot of toys IN them. My hope is after Christmas when it’s time to put the decorations away the kids will have totally forgotten about those toys and I can send them off to Goodwill. Or maybe I’ll treat myself to some new holiday storage and use those old bins to get even more organized.

One of my resolutions for 2015 is to empty the dresser and the cedar chest in the guest room so my guest have a place to unpack when then visit. Speaking of the guest room…

Christmas Decorating Challenge #2: My guest room is blah.

Solution: Despite a fancy chandelier and fairly nice furniture, I am very bored of my guest room. What it REALLY needs is new bedding. It’s the guest room, so I feel like I can go with something fancier than the kids’ rooms or even my room (because let’s be real, my room IS the baby’s room). Red feels very festive and my Ohio State fan in-laws would approve:

But how gorgeous would something mostly white look:

Or maybe I should stick with the current color scheme and just go with something that looks nice and cozy for winter nights:

Speaking of nice and cozy…

Christmas Decorating Challenge #3: MY HOUSE IS FREEZING.

Solution: More rugs. I still love love LOVE the rug I bought for the nursery from Wayfair, so I think it’s time to put one in the family room too. We HAD a rug but it got sort of gross and the kids weren’t on the floor very much so I threw it out. Now that I have a baby who’s going to be mobile (eventually) it would be nice to have something other than hardwoods everywhere. I have spent way too much time browsing rugs (again) but here are a couple favorites:

This one is so classy, but I’m afraid the brown is too close to the color of my enormous ugly couch:

Dash and Albert Rugs Hooked Plain Tin Grey Geometric Area Rug

I’m sort of obsessed with this rainbow rug, but am I going to regret it? I think I might. But I’m not SURE so I keep coming back to it over and over:

So I think I’m going to go with this nice gray rug:

Cambridge+Silver+Rug

I might end up fighting a losing battle against stains, but I also think it looks cushy and warm and neutral enough that I won’t hate it in 5 minutes so I might TRY to keep it clean and nice. Plus I think it will photograph well, which is a good quality to have in a photographer’s house.

And now I have to go order that rug, address 30 birthday invites plus 75 Christmas cards, move the rest of the storage tubs to the basement, hide the GIANT PILE of boxes the UPS guy just delivered, go to the post office, buy two dozen plastic Christmas ornament balls, and feed my family. Maybe I should rethink that order a little bit.

If YOU need something to help get you in the holiday mood, how about a chance to win a $500 GIFT CARD from Wayfair?!

The mandatory entry is comment with a link to what YOU would love to add to your home this holiday season, so be sure to do that or your entries won’t count. Good luck!

It’s actually out of stock, but I would love this table:

We need a new dining table so badly, and of course, that’s the centerpiece of our holiday entertaining!

This, because we have built a fire in our fireplace exactly one time in the six years that we’ve lived here, so it’s a big gaping black hole 100% of the time. I love the idea of being able to have a “fire” going at the push of a button and turn it off without have to sweep ashes or any of that jazz afterward. http://www.wayfair.com/Warm-House-Curved-Glass-Electric-Fireplace-Heater-80-BC211-WMHS1002.html

I’d love to get a kitchen island. We’re currently using a vintage desk in the middle of our kitchen as an island. It’s better than nothing, but not great.

  9. I obviously have a whole new (100 year old house) that needs Wayfair love. But the babies room needs so much love, and her toys are EVERYWHERE. I am obsessed with these Montessori like bookshelves. http://www.wayfair.com/Guidecraft-3-Shelf-28-Bookcase-G6477-EZ2408.html

I actually would LOVE a rug for our living room. My sister’s boys visit at least once a week and being young we play a lot on the floor. It would provide us with comfort and tie the elements of the room together.
