Girl Names: The final list

Sorry, I know I’ve talked about names about a zillion times already, but E came home last night and declared we HAVE to know what we’re calling her before she’s born. So this is basically just me telling him what names he gets to pick from. Because we have a super nice healthy relationship where most communication is done via blog posts and text messages. We are…an American family. (TEN POINTS to the first person who names the movie! Mom, you can’t play!)

Definitely one of these:
Caroline
Corinne
Louisa
Merin/Marin
Eloise

Probably not but still in my brain and you never know what I’ll do after labor and/or possible middle names:
Piper
Persephone (Penny)
Violet
Layla
Hazel
Claire
Mae
Natalie (if she’s born on Christmas)(Because it means “born on Christmas”)

And per Swistle’s suggestion on my first baby name post, if she’s born on Christmas Eve I’m totally using Eve as a middle name. I would use it as a first name but it’s WAAAY too close to “Evan”.

(I put Persephone on the list after I heard it somewhere months ago and totally forgot about it until I was re-reading the draft of this post. I sort of love it an abnormal amount, despite the fact that I simply cannot imagine calling my relatives and announcing “We named her Persephone!!”)

Great choices! You can guess my favorite…

Persephone is so pretty! I thought Piper was in the top list because E liked it? Good luck with your decision-are you going to keep it under wraps?

You’ve Got Mail! (I’m a loser, it IS my favorite movie)

Love, love, love Merin/Marin–I love it so much that I suggested it to my bff that is due on Dec 8 (yes, that is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception–hehe). Her mother’s name is Mary and her MIL is Marian, so I suggested she use Marin since it is a combination of the 2. Sounds like its a go! I also think the idea of using Natalie if she’s born on Christmas is soooo sweet!

TEN POINTS! And I’m glad someone else knew it, I’ve seen that movie an embarrassing number of times and say “Don’t you think daisies are the FRIENDLIEST flower?” at least once a week.

This talk of names and strollers makes me want to have another baby. (Note that talking about babies doesn’t make me want another.)

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Merin. And Louisa. And I was really partial to Piper Mae, but see that both those names have been demoted. ;-) So much fun!

  4. sarrible says:

    I like Caroline.

  5. molly says:

I love all these names. A couple were even on my girl list though I didn’t get to use them. Piper is my favorite and it’s what I would have named my daughter if I had one. Louisa was a fave for middle name. I love Caroline too :) Have fun choosing!

  6. bellegourmande says:

I am torn between Eloise and Hazel. Love love love them both. I can’t use either one bc my son is Ellis and hubby and I both have E names, and bc my BIL’s name is Hazen. So, let me again lve vicariously through you! So excited about your baby girl.

  7. E says:

Alright, so in no particular order:
    1. Piper Mae
    2. Caroline Eve
    3. Caroline Natalie
    4. Caroline Persephone
    5. Caroline Mae
    6. Layla Caroline (Because you just can’t have too many great songs in one name.)

But just so you know, I also really like Persephone and it also happens to be my nickname in WoW. LTD”Penny”. Just sayin’.
Yay for your blog keeping our marriage strong. And BTW you look gorgeous and I love you.

    • MKP says:

Aww and yay and wait you didn’t pick Eloise!!!!

    • I’m gonna go out on a limb and start guessing it’s gonna be Caroline (which I love!). ……..E — please don’t name your child after WOW. :(

    • FourInchHeels says:

Excellent name pairing, E. And bonus points for kissing up to the wife!

Something to think about with Layla (such a fun name to say!!!) is do you like how Layla Davis rolls off the tongue? It’s sing-songy, which you’re either going to think is fantastic and fun, or be annoyed by. I like words that do it, so I’d still vote yes!

  8. Robyn Maier says:

I have always loved Claire..odd that i didn’t think of it for Rory. i also like Layla. i like short, simple names. make sure the girl name sounds good with Evan, of course!

  9. Emmie Bee says:

    LOL! to E!!
He? Is my kinda dude. (Minus the WoW of course!)I literally lol’d at #6

Plus? Layla was totally on my list since like 7th grade. Yes, I had a list in 7th grade. It was written in my Winnie the Pooh spiral bound notebook that is still up in our attic for reference in case I needed to remember how many names you can get from great classic rock songs. Layla &Ruby Tuesday were the two that made it to the adult list. Because, well, obviously.

That all said, I LOVE MERIN. Spelled MERIN because Marin in a city/county here and it is pronounced MA-RIN. and Merin is pronounced like MARY, which is to me more what you are going for.

  10. Joanna says:

Corinne is one of my favs. It was one of my top choices when I was pregnant with Little M

    • bebehblog says:

It’s my middle name, which was chosen for a great-aunt. I’ve always liked it as a middle name but had a TERRIBLE time spelling it as a kid. I don’t think I even knew HOW to spell it until I was 12 or 13.

  11. Other Erin says:

I like Piper Mae and Caroline Mae. I really want to like Persephone (Penny) because it’s such a cool name but I feel like it’s a quarter step over the line between normal names and naming your kid Apple.

  12. raincheckmom says:

Wasn’t your sister’s bunny named “Lola”?

  13. Amy says:

I never tire of the name discussions! :) My fave is Caroline.

  14. I love the name Persephone. Love the story. Love pomegranites. But I would worry about purse-e-phone. Like telephone. My vote is for Louisa Mae.

  15. raincheckmom says:

I was just going to say the same thing about Persephone (purse-e-phone!) People can’t even get my last name right and it is not nearly so complicated or unusual. I must confess I WOULD have a hard time telling people her name.

If you want to use “Penny”, go with “Penelope”.

  16. Natalie says:

Um, I like Natalie ;o) Never had any trouble with my name, and never really knew any other ones until I was in college (and there were three of us in the Journalism school, and once we all three took a class together). I was also born in March, but I love Christmas, so does that count?

Seriously though, I love all of those names (although, Merin sounds pretty but when I saw it spelled out I thought it was Merlin for a minute, but that’s kind of awesome too, no?), they are all gorgeous and you will be able to find the perfect name for your daughter.

I didn’t have Sophia’s middle name picked out until she was born. We knew we wanted an “M” initial (Bill’s middle name has an “M” initial) but hadn’t decided. We went down the list right after she was born (twice), and she was fussy, but calmed down when I said “Madeline” (both times). So she became Sophia Madeline. And it definitely fits her. It was the weirdest thing I have ever encountered. True story though.

  17. raincheckmom says:

    Favorites in no particular order:

    Caroline
    Corinne
    Louisa
    Merin/Marin
    Eloise
    Piper
    Violet
    Claire
    Mae

  18. katie says:

my neighbors just named their little girl eleanor percephone we have a girl in the high school named merrin

  19. lalaland13 says:

Hmm, I think Caroline and Eloise are my favorites. I can totally picture you with a baby named Eloise, with a big purple bow in her blonde (or red) hair. Why purple, I’m not sure. I blame gender norms.

The only thing about Marin/Merin is I’m not sure how to say it, and down South people would butcher the heck out of it. Also, it looks a little like Merlin to me. Wizard baby!

Around Thanksgiving, I demand a “Guess the arrival” thread. With a prize. Or just bragging rights. I did terribly with Evan, so I’m trying to make it two in a row.

  20. Alison says:

Just name her Alison and be done with it :) Caroline is my favorite. That is the name we had picked out if our first had been a girl. And who says the baby has to be named before being born (I mean, your husband obviously, but anyway). Our second one didn’t have a name until the birth certificate lady told me we couldn’t take him home until we named him already!!!! And even at that I had to call my husband (who had ran to the office) and ask what the baby’s name was going to be. We are very prepared :) God help us if the third one is a boy too. He may never get a name!

  21. I like Merin spelled with an Erin in it :)

  22. I would just like you to know that Caroline is also one of our favorites for a girl name (cause its my mom’s name and my great grandmothers name and cause of South Carolina. But I figure even if you used it and we still wanted to you it we could go with some nicknames….plus the whole we-aren’t-having-a-baby-thing. Just wanted to say it for the record).

  23. love these names! also obviously hazel mae has to be the top contender. (;

    also? you’ve got mail.

    heeeee!

    xoxoxoxo!

  24. The rule I’ve always remembered for baby names is the “President” rule- as in, picture baby Sandy in 40 years, when she’s being sworn in as President of the United States. “And now your new President: __________ DAVIS!”

If the name sounds good in that sentence, it’s a good name! (i.e., people probably shouldn’t name their kids PrincessTiaraBumblebee)

I like Caroline, and I love the Christmas-baby Natalie idea!

    • E says:

Well if you use that rule, you alos have to apply the stripper rule. As in:
“Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to the center stage ___________”

Unfortunately, I think that Layla Caroline Davis falls into both.

  25. Swistle says:

I love all your names but especially Marin and Eloise. Then Louisa, then Corrine. But they’re all so close to each other, it’s hard to rank them. And they go so nicely together: Marin Eloise. Eloise Corrine. Marin Louisa. Eloise Marin. Louisa Caroline.

I agree about Persephone, and it’s so unfair because it’s really VERY CLOSE to names like Stephanie, so why SHOULD it be hard to announce to relatives? And yet, there it is.

  26. Connie says:

any name will be perfect! They are all so pretty! If she is “born on Chrismas” “eve” will you name her Natalie Eve?? :)

  27. Danielle says:

I really like Corinne and Piper.

I’m also a fan of E’s top two. Piper Mae and Caroline Eve.

I love the character of Eloise, but I don’t know how I feel about it as a name for an actual real person.

Perhaps if you have political aspirations for your child, Caroline might sound better in Majestic Domestic’s example.

I don’t think any of my favorite baby names would sound right in that sentence. They would probably sound better in this one:
And, the Nobel Prize in Mathematics (Oscar/Tony/whatever else) goes to __________ .

  28. jill says:

oh i love eloise! we usually have “toddler tunes” on in the background all day, well whenever yo gabba gabba isnt on that is, and there is a song called eloise! its so cute! all the names are so unique and cool too though! cant wait to see what you all decide!

  29. Cole says:

I love all of your name picks – especially Caroline and Eloise – and I love Violet as a middle name. Caroline Violet? So pretty!
