Girl Name Suggestions

No, I’m still having a boy. My best friend Erin is also pregnant but doesn’t know what her bebeh is yet. She wants to have a girl name picked out just in case. We both agree that girl names are much harder – they’re either way too common or way too weird. The world doesn’t need another Jennifer or Jessica. So if you’ve been sitting on the super-special-awesome-perfect girl name and wouldn’t mind sharing, you’d be doing her a big favor.

She likes girly names better than unisex or boyish ones, and old fashioned names better than Mackenzye or Nevaeh. My suggestions were Vivian and Corinne (my middle name, because of course she should name her baby after me). The name also has to be husband-approved, and he’s kind of difficult to please. No complaining Mitch, you know it’s true.

Hmm. All I got is a rather silly quiz.

    http://blogthings.com/whatkindofnamesdoyoulikequiz/

When I first took it and put the result on myspace (I know) I got that I like names that are “retro and fashionable” like Audrey and Fiona. Which isn’t bad, and closer to the result I got just now of “Modern and popular.” Not so much.

This is a rather ridiculous site, just FYI. You can also figure out “What kind of pancakes are you?” and “What’s your celebrity baby name?” Pardon me, I’m off to figure out what my belly button says about me.

I got the same results as you. Ironically, both Evan and the name my friend Erin picked for a boy are on the last boy-name list.

And obviously my belly button says I’m a slut, since it is both an innie and pierced.

I think Julia Catherine is pretty. That was SUPPOSED to be my name, but my dear, domineering grandma stepped in and said no more – the passing on of the name was to end with my aunt. Apparently she ruled the roost, because I got a clunky name, not the pretty name. And I’m still holding a grudge over it!

You mean both names were on the last question about which name you like? Interesting.

Also, I am blueberry pancakes. And my winter hat is a beret. And I look like an Aquarius. No word yet on the belly button, as I am at at work and don’t wish to inspect it too closely in the office.

I always wanted to use the name Etta because it’s part of my grandmother’s name. But I’m not sure I’ll use it, because it sounds weird with my last name that starts with O.

Katrina—won’t be confused for a boy yet still can be shortened to Katy if you want.

Cadence–also can be shortened to Cady—note to Suzanne, if I ever have a girl this will be her name, so Erin can use it but not you :):)

    I also really like Corinne.

  7. lalaland13 says:

The problem with Katrina is the hurricane. That’s pretty much off my list forever because of that. If it was ever really on it, which it wasn’t.

  8. Erin (i dont have a fake name :( ) says:

Here are the names that are left that the husband didn’t veto…..

    Charlotte, Amelia, Adrianna, and Lilian.

I’d be curious to see which of those everyone thinks is the best one.

  9. Erin (i dont have a fake name :( ) says:

Keep in mind that I like nicknames and we can’t use Charlie for Charlotte.

  10. sarrible says:

Just not Emma and Olivia. They’re lovely names, but they are so common among aughtie baby girls that they’re going to be the Jennifer and Jessica of the 2010s.

  11. sarrible says:

Oh, and I like Charlotte. Call her Chuck, like on Pushing Daisies. Amelia makes me think of Amelia Bedelia.

  12. J.D.Regent says:

I always wanted to name a daughter Magdalena; you can call her Maggie. It’s heavily Catholic but it’s also vaguely whorish, which makes it both traditional and subversive at the same time.

  13. J.D.Regent says:

Also on the saintly tip: Cecelia. You can call her Ceecee if that’s not too cutesy for you. Patron saint of musicians.

I’m currently addicted to January as a first name. However, my favorite little girl name is Grace and that will likely be what I name the first daughter, if she ever exists!

    Charlotte is beautiful!

Also, my great grandmother’s names were Violet and Verna, I love them both!

  15. h_a_l says:

@ Erin – I like Lilian – then she can have Lily for a nickname. Which to me would open plenty of doors for pretty flower tattoos in her honor :) Adriana is also really pretty. I do like plant / flower based names though. We’ve settled on Ivy if we have a girl.

  16. Abigail. I tried to get my wife to name my daughter that, but we ended up going with Isabella, mainly because a) she looks like an Isabella with her dark hair and beautiful eyes and b) we were in Firenze (Florence) when we found out my wife was pregnant with her.

Anyway, I liked Abigail, mainly from a nerd-crush on Abigail Adams. I also like Veronica (Thank you Elvis Costello).

  17. bebehblog says:

h_a_l – You naming a baby girl Ivy is the cutest thing in the whole world. I am very jealous.

Newtie – I don’t think I’ve heard Veronica suggested before, I kind of like it! Unfortunately Erin and I new a less-than-nice person with that name, so it’s out.

Sarrible – Erin and I had the exact same discussion re: Pushing Daisies & Amelia Bedelia.

  18. Erin (i dont have a fake name :( ) says:

Yeah, Veronica and Monica are both out!

  19. sarrible says:

Aww, but Veronica Mars is so, so awesome!

  20. Other Erin says:

I like Charlotte. I LOVE Abigail. It’s probably my favorite girl’s name. And then you can do Abbie as a nickname which is still normal.

  21. @AGreenEyeDevil: Holy crap, my grandmother wanted me to be Julia Catherine! But my mom vetoed Julia for Jennifer (ugh, so common!). Catherine is passed down in my family, so that stayed.

  22. Oh, and I love Amelia. It’s pretty, old-fashioned and always reminds me of Amelia Earhart, who was just rad.

  23. Katie Gibson-Stofflet says:

Aunt Corinne was wonderful by the way, I wish you had met her. And I am quite partial to Genevieve Raye.

One name for each of my girls and my mother.

    Aunt Kathleen Grace (aka Katie)
