About A Boot

We (and every other family with a toddler) have had these Target boots for ages but because Little Evan has such tiny little feet (he’s wearing a size 5 or 6 shoe at almost 23 months) he never wears them. They’ve just lead to a lot of falling down and frustration.

Little Evan recently found them in his closet – I think I pulled them out of storage when I was struggling to find snow boots, thinking at least they were waterproof and would be better than nothing – and he started carrying them around saying “BOOT! BOOT! BOOT!”

A couple days ago he got bored with just holding them and wanted to wear them. He’s definitely gotten the hang of walking in them but because they’re kind of big they fall off a lot. It was a constant battle of on-off-on-off-on and eventually I told him I was done playing Prince Charming to his Cinderella with lost boots.

So when I saw him sitting here with the dog, wearing his boots again I was a little surprised.  Did he…put them on himself? How awesome is that?! And how terrifying – he cannot possibly be old enough to put his own boots on. That seems like such an advanced skill, such a grown up ability, so much more of a KID thing than a TODDLER thing. It made me a little teary-eyed. If he doesn’t even need me to help him with his boots, how much longer before he hardly needs me at all?

Of course, he hardly ever gets them on the right feet. So maybe he still needs me for a little longer.

Ooh, I love his boots – and how great he can put them on! I have too-big-for-me yellow rainboots. They constantly fall off – Mommy kind of wishes I could put them back on myself!

OMG, yes! WE have these boots! Ev started wearing them a few months ago because I decided there was no point buying snow boots when he wasn’t going to be out in snow all that much…so I got rain boots he’d get tons more use out of. And they were definitely too big when I got them. But he still wanted to wear them and quickly figured out how to get them on his own feet, which boggled my mind. Must be those handy dandy handles on them. He’s clearly had a growth spurt because they fit much better now, no falling off at all.

Calder had these and loved them. He’s since moved on due to his giant feetitude. I think they get attached to the boots because it’s the one item they can get on themselves. It’s such a goddamn accomplishment for them. In world where you have control over pretty much nothing, deciding when and where you are going to wear your boots is a pretty big freaking deal. Like, I may still crap my pants, but I have ACED this whole boot-wearing thing.

  7. Spencer calls these his “eye boots.” We need to have a virtual green boot parade/blog hop or something. It would be AWESOME.

Are those his “I’ve got new boots” boots?

I’m still jealous that we didn’t buy those cute green ones. Oh well, there’s always next year. I’ve seen some dinosaur ones that I really want, I mean, that the GIRLS really want. :)

Don’t worry, he’ll start putting them on the wrong feet at least 50% of the time, so he’ll still need you!

You need to play him that Boots song by the Laurie Berkner Band! JD loves stomping around to that! So far he has only figured out how to put MY shoes on- I wish he could help me out and at least put on his own shoes :P

  11. MKP says:

Dawwwww. I love him and Brutus together. And those boots are precious. And he’ll always need you, there’ll just come a day when it doesn’t involve bodily functions or dressing himself :)
