7 Things To Do With Pinecones

Thing #1 – Leave them on the ground and let them turn into pine trees like God intended. Because unless you have a herd of toddlers to put to work, why the hell would you waste perfectly good time picking up pine cones?*

First, bake them in the oven at 250 for 20 minutes to kill the spiders/bugs/nasty fungus stuff that might be living in them. Because nothing ruins the charming fall decor at your dinner party like poisonous spider bites as parting gifts for your guests.

Thing #2 – Roll them in acrylic paint and put them in a rustic basket as a centerpiece.

Thing #3 – Spray paint them and put them in a glass vase.

Thing #4 -Wrap the stem ends in yarn and make a garland.

Thing #5 – Cover them with spray adhesive and glitter and hang them up.

Thing #6 – Spread them with peanut butter and bird seed to make a bird feeder.

Thing #7 -Make scented potpourri: Put them in a ziplock bag & spray with adhesive, add cinnamon/cloves/lemon zest/pumpkin pie spice. Close & shake, open and sniff.

TA-DA! You just wasted your entire stay-at-home-lazy-day making pointless pinecone crafts!

*No toddler labor was exploited in the making of these crafts. Ok, maybe just a LITTLE toddler labor. But they liked it.

I love it! I have pine cones that have been sitting in my basement since last year (I can’t even imagine the comments Matt makes every time he walks by them.) Maybe this year I can make them more fancy!

  3. I love them! Especially the garland and the hanging glittery ones. Please come to my house and make it look pretty and creative. I could even arrange some more free toddler labor if that helps!

These are really neat! I remember doing peanut butter/birdseed pinecones as a kid.

My grandma spraypainted some pinecones gold and we still have them, and hang them on our Christmas tree.

i very much thought your asterisk explaining why one would ever spend time picking up pinecones would talk about how grandpa used to pay us a dime a pinecone for picking them out of their yard. i’m pretty sure we made bank, for small children.

Thank you for the tip on putting my pinecones in the oven. I had a few non-paying tenants in mine last year, happy to say they were not poisonous! I have a few big pine trees in my yard and I am always picking them up while enjoying time outside…no little ones here to help! My husband keeps asking me what I am saving them for…stuff, I say! My co-workers loved putting peanut butter and bird seed on them at last years Christmas party but that only took a few out of the lot. Love your ideas and pictures…I am inspired and now my husband will be able to see what…STUFF looks like! Thank you!!!
