1 minute 31 seconds of toddler fun

This video contains several things I’ve been trying to capture on camera for the last couple of weeks:

1. The palms-up “I dunno!” shrug, accompanied by the face. I think I’ve shrugged like that maybe twice in my life, but obviously one of those times was in front of Baby Evan.
2. That “Ey-ee?” noise he makes when he pulls his arm back to throw something. I was at playgroup two weeks ago and complained that Baby Evan LOVED to throw things but had a hard time distinguishing appropriate stuff from hard, pointy things. One of the moms said “Why don’t you get him to ask “Ready?” before he throws?” AND THEN HE DID. Because she mentioned it once within his earshot. It doesn’t really help though, since he just ask “Ey-ee?” before throwing the hard, pointy things. But at least you have fair warning. It is often followed by “Oh!” (throw!) but not always.
3. The “Ooooooo-ho-oo-oo-oo” that goes with the “Oh” face from the weekend’s post. He does it all the time and I always crack up.

(As usually, please ignore the mess and the dog and my husband’s gym shorts yadda yadda yadda. Whatevs, this is what my life looks like. I’m over it.)

(Also, free housekeeping tip of the day: Socks pick up a lot of dog hair and dirt and are easily washable.)

Niko does that same “Iunno” shrug, and I have no idea where he learned it. At the International Meeting of Adorable Toddlers, perhaps? Maybe there was a workshop on it…

All this time I’ve been right: being a mom to a kid is the same as being a mom to a dog. This exact scene regularly takes place in my house with my two dogs.
    “Where’s the ball?”
    “Go get the ball!”
    “Bring me the ball!”
“Oh crap, the ball went somewhere she can’t reach it!”
“Stop freaking out! I’ll get you the ball!”
“No, mama doesn’t want to throw the ball anymore!”
“If you don’t stop throwing that ball at me, I’m taking the ball away!”
“Let your sister have a turn with the ball!”

E uses the EXACT SAME tone of voice for both the dog and the baby, along with a surprising number of identical commands: Get the ball! Sit! Stay! No! Down!

Although as you can see, our dog doesn’t give a crap about the ball or the game. Because he thinks he’s a person.

I grew up with dogs, and I use a lot of the same non-verbal communication (clapping for attention, snapping fingers and pointing, making exagerated happy or sad faces, etc) and tone-of-voice (low voice for Stern and commands, high voice for praise) that I did with our dogs, on our son. Some people think that’s weird, I don’t know.

Awww – love the hug at the end! I have the same Captain Awesome shirt :)

I love how Brutus is so OVER IT. Now that he has someone else who can do the fetching.

  15. MKP says:

hahahaha….that is all kinds of cute. Your person-dog is like “Thank god I don’t have to entertain the tall ones with this game anymore – I’m go glad they got their own toy to amuse themselves.”

It sounded like Baby E said “reach it” – and I loved the “It’s where you threw it” gesture when E asked where it was. Moar plz – it’s like vicarious babysitting where I don’t have to do your dishes to make up for eating all your ice cream sandwiches.

Not that I did that when I used to babysit.
